Dr. Omar M. Ghanem


 

Omar M. Ghanem M.D. is the chair of the Metabolic and Abdominal Wall Reconstructive Surgery Division at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Ghanem earned his B.Sc. at American University in Beirut and his M.D. at the University of Balamand in Lebanon. He completed a residency in general surgery at Medstar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Ghanem continued his training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, completing a fellowship in Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgery earning fellow teacher of the year award in 2017.

Dr. Ghanem went on to pursue a community-based practice at Mosaic Life Care as a bariatric surgeon for 3 years prior to returning to Mayo in August of 2020. His clinical interests include bariatric surgery with a specific focus on complex & re-operative bariatric revisions as well as minimally invasive median arcuate ligament release surgeries. His research interests include duodenal switch outcomes as well as revisions after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedures. He is frequently invited to give presentations on his work and has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, and other written publications. He has also published two books as an editor in 2025.

In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Ghanem is the associate program director of the Mayo Clinic Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship program. He is the associate editor of the Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases Journal (SOARD), Clinical Obesity Journal and Surgical Innovation Journal. He is also on the editorial board of multiple journals including Annals of Surgery, Obesity Surgery, Surgical Laparoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques (SLEPT) journals. He is the Co-Chair of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Committee at The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Metabolic and Bariatric Committee. He also has assumed multiple leadership roles at ASMBS and IFSO.
