Dr. Josep Vidal received his PhD in Medicine (qualification Sobresaliente Cum Laude) from the University of Barcelona in 1998. The title of his thesis work, directed by Professor Enric Vilardell, was 'Etiopathogenesis of type 2 diabetes: role of mitochondrial glycerol-phosphate dehydrogenase'. In this work he delved into the paradigm of pancreatic beta cell dysfunction as a key element in the onset of type 2 diabetes, a paradigm that is still valid today. As part of his predoctoral training, the candidate stayed at the 'Medicine Experimental Laboratory' of the Free University of Brussels, under the direction of Professor W. Malaisse, to further investigate the pathogenic role of pancreatic beta cell dysfunction.
