Dr. Javier Goncalves is a general surgery second-year resident at Hospital Domingo Luciani - Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela. He currently serves as a speaker of the Emergency Room Trauma Course (ERTC) endorsed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). During his everyday responsibilities, he receives, refers and treats patients who arrive at the Polytrauma Unit of Hospital Domingo Luciani.
During his years as a medical student (2012-2018), he participated in the Scientific Society of Medical Students (SOCIEM) obtaining recognition for several research works and participated in the multidisciplinary research and service camp (CUMIS) from 2016 to 2018 where he help provide medical healthcare to more than 1000 indigenous patients in the rural communities of Bolivar State, Venezuela.
He also served as a representative in the student committee during university and national protests from 2013-2018, organizing the university community in search of student and national demands. And participated in cultural and sport groups (football, basketball, volleyball and musical groups), representing Venezuela in the AMERIDE’s Choir Festival at Sao Lorenzo, Brazil (2012).
As a resident he is concerned about providing the best quality of care to his patients despite the difficulties of the national health system. Interested in continuing his studies in minimal invasion surgeries to increase the access and availability of these procedures in the healthcare public setting in Venezuela.
